Jamboree Heights Swimming Club

Australian Age Championships 2011

Report by Coach Rob

Over the Easter holidays three Jamboree Heights swimmers competed at the Australian Age Championships for 13 to 18 years olds. This meet is one of the most highly competitive age meets in the world with many swimmers from all over the country, and many from around the world, aiming to swim their best.

Liam Roberts swam personal best times in both his events at his first Nationals, and his times of 1.10.62, and 2.37.06 placed him 20th and 23rd in Australia for his 100m and 200m Breaststroke races.
Liam has had a fantastic season, and we were both very happy with these results.

Another first timer was our own Jye Cornwell.  Jye has had a few disruptions in his lead up over the last 10 weeks, but still managed to swim very fast and equal his PB from States in the 100m Backstroke in 1.05.83. This placed Jye 23rd in Australia, and I’m positive he will only improve on this achievement with the valuable experience he gained throughout the week.

Our third swimmer was Tatum Marais who swam a great 100m Freestyle race on the Wednesday which helped settle the nerves for her main event the following day. Tatum equalled her PB in the 100m Free swimming a 1.00.48 to finish 27th overall. It was a great race and I know that Tatum has the potential to improve greatly in this event with a little more swimming under her belt. On Thursday, in the cut throat 50m Freestlye event, Tatum swam a .4sec PB to just make the final, in a time of 26.92. Tatum swam out of lane 5 for the final and swam the best swim of her life to record a time of 26.47 and finish with a bronze medal, Jamboree Heights first ever Australian Age medal.   Congratulations Tatum!

Competing with over 1500 athletes at this meet is the highlight of these young swimmers careers and I know that this will only motivate them and our club to continue to try our best and excel in the pool so we can have an opportunity to compete at such meets in the future. A big thank you to our team manager/parent, Andrew Roberts, who did all the driving and helped me look after our guys all week.

Andrew’s assistance helped these young people achieve their best and also helped me out immensely.
