Two new club records were set at the pool during the Club Meet on Friday night (3rd February). The first to undertake a record attempt was Jye Cornwell, swimming 50m Backstroke (14 yr boys). Jye set a new record mark of 28.73s. Next was Liam Roberts, who swam 100m Breast Stroke (15 yr boys) in 1:13.04 - another new club record. Well done to both guys - we look forward to many more! |

Queensland Championships - Day 7 Coach's Report
Fri, 16/12/2011 - 10:45pmDay 7 Heats Liam Roberts was first in the pool today for Jamboree Heights, and swam himself into the final of the boys 15 years 200m Medley. Liam’s time of 2.22.49 was a second off his PB and he is looking good to improve on that time tonight. 90 minutes later, “Robbo” was back in the pool for the boys 15 years 100m Butterfly. Another PB for Liam by a couple of seconds, but not fast enough to make the final with Liam finishing as the 16th fastest QLDer for that event. Good luck to Liam tonight. Laura Rheinlander competed in her first State Titles this morning in the girls 12 years 100m Backstroke. Her smile was amazing and it matched the PB she swam. Laura’s time of 1.22.66 was a credit to all the hard work Laura has done over the past few years. Monica Feret swam a strong PB this morning in her one and only event, the girls 13 years 100m Backstroke. This is the third straight year Monica has competed in this event, and her PB time of 1.16.38 placed her around the middle of the field for her event. Monica can proudly say that she is still the fastest Feret in the family. Well done Monica. Michael Canham swam his 100m Backstroke event in a PB time of 1.07.44. Michael will race out of Lane 1 again tonight in the boys 13 years 100m Backstroke final. Jye Cornwell swam his fourth event of the championship this morning in the boys 14 years 200m Freestyle. Although this is not Jye’s preferred event, he still swam it like a man on a mission, and smashed his PB by 6 seconds. Jye’s time of 2.05.93 was just outside the final and placed Jye 18th overall. Our final swimmer of the morning and making it 100% PB’s for the Jamboree Heights swimmers today was Jake Buckley. Jake’s 2.48.97 in the boys 14 years 200m Breaststroke completed a nice day for our team and also placed Jake as the 21st QLD for this event.
Day 7 Finals Liam Roberts swam strong to post another PB tonight in the boys 15 years 200m Medley. Liam’s time of 2.21.41 placed Liam 8th QLDer. Well Done Liam. Michael Canham swam bravely tonight in his ninth and final individual race of the championships. Michael improved on his PB to 1.06.93 in the boys 13 years 100m Backstroke, and was an agonising 0.24 off winning the bronze medal. Well done Michael. It was a fantastic week of swimming by the Jamboree Heights swimmers and I hope you all enjoyed my daily wrap ups. It is such a massive week, with lots of cheers and even a few tears, but we made it to the end and should all be extremely proud of our efforts. |
Queensland Championships - Day 6 Coach's Report
Thu, 15/12/2011 - 11:23pmDay 6 Heats Tim Ngugi kicked off the morning for Jamboree Heights in a PB swim of 1.25.43 for the boys 11 years 100m Butterfly. Tim looked very controlled throughout the race and only tired a little in the last 15m. Tim should be very happy with his 2 second PB and 25th placing on debut. Kate Dillon swam a 12 month old PB in her pet event, the 100m Breaststroke. Her time of 1.30.73 in the girls 12 years event placed Kate 44th QLDer overall. With a bit more time spent at the pool in the next few months, I’m positive Kate can improve on today’s result. Our 11 year old girls swam exceptional this morning with both girls slashing big chunks off their PB’s. Georgia Gibbs swam a 6 second PB in the 100m Backstroke (1.20.19) to finish 19th overall, whilst her good mate, Lina Shen, swam a 4 second PB (1.23.76) to finish as the 35th fastest QLDer. Both these girls executed their race plans perfectly and swam impressive times. Awesome results for our girls considering how amazing the competition here is. Our last heat swimmer this morning was Jye Cornwell. Jye was very impressive stopping the clock at 1.02.18 in the boys 14 years 100m Backstroke. This 1.5 second PB on an already tough existing PB, was a statement to the rest of his competitors for tonight. Jye will race from lane 6 tonight, and will be up against some of the toughest backstrokers in the country, but that’s something that the ‘Ol Corndog’ relishes in. Well done to our team this morning, another 100% record of PB’s. Tomorrow is our biggest day of racing with 11 of our 16 Jamboree Heights State team competing on the final day.
Day 6 Finals Jye Cornwell swam awesome tonight as he won his first Queensland Championship medal. His Bronze medal in the boys 14 years 100m Backstroke was a nice reward for all of Jye’s hard work. His time of 1.02.34 was just a tick outside his heats time, but still a great time and awesome practice in preparation for Nationals later in the season.
Coach Rob congratulates our Bronze Medallist in the 100m Backstroke, Jye Cornwell
It has been great coaching Jye for 7 seasons and rewarding seeing his State Titles progression. In 2008 as an 11 year old, Jye swam 1.22.35 for the 100m Backstroke and came 23rd, in 2009 as a 12 year old Jye swam 1.16.22 and came 22nd, in 2010 as a 13 year old, Jye swam a 1.05.83 and came 4th, and today he improved again to win the Bronze. Well Done Jye!! |
Queensland Championships - Day 5 Coach's Report
Thu, 15/12/2011 - 6:26amDay 5 Heats Levi Whyte and his good buddy, Teejay Paterson, swam their first and only event of the meet this morning. The boys both swam PB’s and their times of 1.08.62 for Levi and 1.07.34 for TJ placed them 24th and 18th respectively. Levi has had quite a few interruptions to his training over the last few months, but I hope he has a good run from here on and achieves his first National qualifying time soon. Georgia Gibbs made her debut at the State Championships this morning. Her 3.05.33 for the girls 11 years 200m Medley was just a touch outside Georgia’s best time from a few weeks ago, and placed her 57th out of 82 girls. Medley racing is an extremely tough event, and I think Georgia will learn a lot from today’s race. It is also timely for Georgia to have a good hit out before her pet event, the 100m Backstroke tomorrow morning. Michael ‘the King’ Canham was back in the pool again this morning, and knew that only another PB would make the final, as is the standard at this year’s Queensland State Titles for every single event. Mike’s 2 second PB this morning was as good as it gets. Mike’s 58.02 is also his 2nd National qualifying event for next year. Mike will be racing out of lane 1 tonight at 8.10pm. Our last swimmer this morning was ‘Trainer of the month’, Jake Buckley. I would have bet my life on Jake swimming a PB, and lucky for me, Jake was like my mailman – “he delivered!” Jake’s 3 second demolition of his PB (1.15.39) was an extremely awesome swim and quite an achievement for Jake as he is only 0.39 of a second from qualifying for the Australian Championships next year. Jake missed the final tonight, but still placed 16th overall in QLD. Jake’s commitment is second to none, and with a few more chances in the New Year, I’m sure Jake will meet the challenge before him and achieve great success next year. Well done to the Jamboree Heights Swim team today, another great day for the Jamboree Heights’s Swim Team family.
Day 5 Finals Michael Canham was back on deck tonight for his final at 8pm. Supported by his parents and his big brother Anthony, (Jamboree Heights club Captain 2004 to 2007), Michael swam another beautiful race. Michael again improved on his heat time (58.00), but just missed the dais to finish as the 5th fastest Queenslander in the boys 13 years 100m Freestyle. Michael has a well deserved day off tomorrow as he prepares for his pet event, the 100m Backstroke on Friday. Well done tonight Mike, you did the whole club proud! |
Queensland Championships - Day 4 Coach's Report
Tue, 13/12/2011 - 10:57pmDay 4 Heats Liam Roberts kicked off the day with a slick PB in the boys 15 years 100m Breaststroke this morning. Touching in at 1.09.99 was a nice way to crack the 1.10 barrier for the first time. He goes into tonight’s final as the 8th ranked swimmer. Good luck Robbo. Michael Canham backed up again today for his 4th straight day of racing, and swam in the boys 13 years 200m Backstroke. His time of 2.26.81 was a solid 6 second PB, but not enough this time to make the final. Michael will still go out to Chandler tonight as first reserve, but if he doesn’t get to swim, he’ll still be the 9th fastest QLDer for this event. Our last swimmer this morning (at 2.45pm) was Jye Cornwell. Jye’s ability to stay tough and hang in there was evident today, as Jye swam another amazing PB in the boys 14 years 100m Freestyle. They are long, hot days sitting out at Chandler and Jye kept his cool to swim 56.06. Jye will be racing from lane 6 tonight. He is only .06 from the Australian qualifying time, and I’m positive Jye will step up to the challenge again tonight. Well done to our 3 senior boys who competed this morning.
Day 4 Finals Liam Roberts swam under his heats time tonight (1.09.91) and also managed to finish as QLD’s 5th fastest 15 year old 100m Breaststroker. In one of the hottest breaststroke races of the meet, Liam swam strongly, and is also happy to register his first National qualifying time. I’m looking forward to seeing how much Liam can improve over this distance in the coming months. Jye Cornwell swam outside his skin tonight. The new “Alpha Dale” as he is now affectionately known, swam his third individual National qualifying time in the boys 14 years 100m Freestyle. Jye’s time of 55.60 earned him 5th place overall. It was a very close race with Silver (55.33) and Bronze (55.43) not that much in front of Jye. One of the hardest things to do in top level swimming is to swim a PB in the heat, then come back that night and swim faster again. Our 3 individual finalists so far all have a perfect record of achieving this feat, something that we have been working on for years. I’m very proud and excited at all of our swims so far. This meet is so exciting, with three more big days to come and new faces making their debut State Titles appearance. |
Queensland Championships - Day 3 Coach's Report
Mon, 12/12/2011 - 11:09pmDay 3 Heats
Michael Canham was next in the pool in the first of his 2 swims of the morning. True to form, Michael slashed an amazing 10 seconds off his 200m Medley time (2.28.32) to just miss the final and finish 12th QLD’er. 90 minutes later, Michael swam another PB, swimming 5 seconds under his best time to make the boys 13 years 100m Butterfly final (1.04.57). Michael will go into the final as the 5th fastest QLDer tonight. Jye Cornwell was outstanding in making his first state final of the Championships. Jye swam a 5 second PB this morning and will be swimming out of lane 1 tonight. His time of 2.19.80 in the boys 14 years 200m Backstroke is only .80 of a second off National qualifying, so I’m sure Jye will be pumped for tonight’s exciting final. Well done to our recently departed, but long time Jamboree Heights swimmer Cody Paterson. Cody made his first State final ever this morning in the 200m Medley. Good luck to all our boys tonight. They all swam amazing.
Day 3 Finals

Jye Cornwell swam under the National qualifying time tonight in the boys 14 years 200m Backstroke. Jye’s time of 2.18.54 was swum with skill and precision, and I can’t wait to see how fast Jye will swim in his pet event, the 100m Backstroke later in the week. Jye finished 5th QLDer tonight and can now look forward to adding this event to his National program over Easter later next year. Cody Paterson also finished 5th QLDer tonight in his first State title night swim. Top swim Cody. |
Queensland Championships - Day 1 and Day 2 Coach's Report
Mon, 12/12/2011 - 12:59pmDay 1 - Relay Day - Saturday 10th December
Our 14 and under boys led the way just as they did 2 years ago, finishing 4th in the Freestyle relay and 5th in the Medley relay. The team of Jye Cornwell, Jake Buckley, Michael Canham and Cody Paterson all did Pb’s in order to achieve such a great outcome. Our 9 & 10 years boys team of Remi Gordon, Jeremy Bowden, Kaleb Welfare and Elliott Gerrard swam amazing to finish 7th in the Medley relay and 17th in the freestyle relay. Our other Boys team was in the 16 and under division. Liam Roberts, Teejay Paterson, Levi Whyte and Daniel Busch all swam strong to finish 18th and 21st in their relays. Our only girls team at this meet was our 12 and under team. Kate Dillon, Georgia Gibbs, Hannah Borthwick and Lina Shen all gained some great experience competing out at Chandler with some of the biggest names in world swimming. They came 30th and 33rd in their relay events which is a solid performance given there were over 80 teams in each event. Well done to all of our relay swimmers, it was great to see everyone wearing their Jamboree Heights gear with such pride.
Day 2 - Sunday 11th
Great start to the meet, looking forward to Day 3. |
2011 Kingfisher Cup Results
Sat, 03/12/2011 - 11:10amThe 2011 Kingfisher Cup has been swum and won by Jake Buckley, edging out Laura Rheinlander and Liam Roberts in a very exciting and competitive final. The 2011 finalists were:
Jake was very gracious in the post-final interview, putting his success down to his training regime (he'd earlier won trainer of the month). Congratulations and great swimming Jake - good luck at the State Championships!
Earlier, a 'flop-off' was required when the judges couldn't split three of the contestants in the annual belly flop contest. Competition was tight and commitment paramount as Kaleb Welfare, Josh McIntyre and Jye Cornwell took to the blocks a second time. In the end, Jye's style and size won the night to the cheers and grimmaces of the crowd - hitting the water in a memorable horizontal smackdown. One to watch for next year: Kaleb.
In the kids v parents races, the scorers put away their pencils as the kids took a commading 6-1 lead. It goes without saying that the parent handicaps will be reviewed for next year. Thanks everyone for a great night, especially to Coach Rob for some awesome commentary. |
